A fire broke out Wednesday at an abandoned apartment complex in East Orange.

Firefighters were on the scene at Steuben Street and Freeway Drive East.

East Orange Mayor Ted Green says there were no injuries, adding no one was found inside the building and no signs of squatters.

“One of our firefighters actually was going home, and he saw the fire. He pivoted around the building and called it in,” Green said.

The building that fire crews focused on is in the center of the complex. The complex has been abandoned for at least the past 20 years.

There is no word on what caused the fire.
