Authorities say a fire that destroyed a historic New Jersey synagogue appears accidental.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office says Friday's blaze at Congregation Poile Zedek in New Brunswick appears to have started on the first floor.
Authorities are investigating the cause. They say one sacred scroll was saved and no one was injured.
It took firefighters nearly four hours to bring the fire under control.
The specific cause remains under investigation.
The synagogue opened in 1923.
The congregation's website says the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. About 100 families belong to the Orthodox Ashkenazic synagogue.
