Crews began cleaning up what officials hope is the last of the tainted soil at West Brook Middle School Monday.
Paramus Mayor James Tedesco said the smaller area of contaminated soil will be the focus of Monday?s cleanup and the larger area, where the soil was stockpiled, will be Tuesday?s focus. ?By the end of the week, we should have it all removed and the grounds back to as normal a condition as we can say it is,? Tedesco said.
Tedesco added the crews will be digging deeper and wider than required to make sure all of the soil is removed.
The town and parents learned of the contaminated soil at the beginning of June. But, school officials, including Superintendent Janice Dime, allegedly knew about the tainted soil, which tested positive for the banned pesticide Chlordane, last year. Students finished out the remainder of the school year at Bergen Community College.
Most parents have been calling for Dime?s resignation. Tedesco said negotiations between attorneys for the school board and Dime continued through the weekend.
