The FIFA World Cup fan fest event at Liberty State Park in Jersey City has been canceled.

Instead, Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced that she is launching a $5 million community initiative to spread the festivities around the state.

“From fan zones to neighborhood watch parties to street fairs, we are investing in the communities and small businesses that make New Jersey extraordinary,” Sherrill wrote in an X post.

The money will fund two categories of events – major fan zones and community watch parties and festivals.

A spokesperson for Jersey City issued a statement following the cancellation announcement.

"The Governor made the right call. It became increasingly clear that there was no workable, cost-effective way to manage the influx of tens of thousands of fans into Liberty State Park, while maintaining access to the members of the Jersey City community,” wrote communications director Nathaniel Styer.

The news of the cancellation came exactly five months before the World Cup final will be held at MetLife Stadium.
