The bank robber known as the ?Mad Hatter? may have struck a Montclair bank Friday.
The FBI hopes it?ll be able to catch him red-handed because of the dye pack planted at the scene.
The ?Mad Hatter? previously robbed banks in central and northern New Jersey for the past eight months and has eluded police. Police say the robber always wears a hat.
Police say surveillance cameras at the Commerce Bank took at least 22 pictures of the robber before he got away. The cameras show a man give a teller a note, then run away with money. He didn?t get far before a red dye pack exploded in the bag.
The FBI is hoping the red dye pack stained his clothing, hands or face so he?ll be easier for the public or police to spot.
Customers say it's hard to believe someone would ever try to rob a bank in one of the busiest areas in Montclair.
The FBI is not positive the robber at this bank was the ?Mad Hatter,? but says it is likely.
