The tragic Bronx fire has made many New Jersey families take a second look at how prepared they are for a fire. The importance of smoke alarms has gained nationwide attention this week after the deadly fire in the Bronx that took the lives of 10 people and left others injured. Sources say there were two smoke alarms in the house, but neither of them had batteries. Edison Fire Department Captain Brian Latham is stressing the importance of making sure houses have smoke alarms in place and in working order. Along with smoke alarms, fire officials say families should have an escape plan. They say the plan should include a family alarm, like pounding on walls or yelling ?fire.? Officials also recommend sleeping with the bedroom door closed to keep heat and smoke out if a fire does break out. Safety experts say, by following these rules and having a plan in place, not all fires will turn into tragedy.
