Many came out today to mourn the sudden death of singer and Newark-native Whitney Houston after she was found dead in her Beverly Hills hotel room yesterday.
Houston, who was born in Newark and later lived in East Orange, was remembered by childhood friends as a standout.
"It was always something special about her and her voice," says Denise Davis.
Mourners left candles and flowers at the East Orange elementary school named in her honor.
"Everyone is stunned, everyone is hurt," says Arleatha Harrison. "We loved her, she was loved a lot and we will always cherish her"
