The family says the man killed was 27-year-old Teshawn Rogers.
Mayor Steven Fulop
posted on social media that the department Street Crimes Unit spotted a person "acting suspiciously and noticed a bulge in his clothing" and thought it was a gun.
When officers approached, the man opened fire, Fulop says, and the officer fired back, killing the man. A firearm was recovered.
Teshawn's grandma says that's not what happened.
"They don't what that bulge is, if it was a bulge," said Darshell Robinson. "It could have been food, cigarettes, anything."
Robinson says her grandson was shot in the back.
"But we are going to find out and somebody's going to answer," said Robinson. "That shouldn't have happened to my grandson.
