Family of HS basketball player says opponents yelled racial slurs
A Sussex County family says that they are considering taking legal action after their son was subjected to racial slurs from a crowd during a high school basketball game.
The incident apparently happened at the Wallkill Valley Regional High School basketball game in Hamburg. The team was playing against the Lenape Valley High School team.
Stephanie Dickerson posted on Facebook that her son Nasir Dickerson was the subject of the slurs. Nasir plays for the Lenape Valley High School basketball team. Dickerson says that Wallkill Valley supporters made monkey noises and yelled the “N-word” at Nasir throughout the game. The Dickersons are African-American.
The Wallkill Valley Regional School District superintendent released a statement following the incident. "...the district will undertake a thorough investigation. As a district, we take these accusations very seriously. Racism in any form will not, nor has it ever been tolerated at Wallkill Valley Regional High School."
"Respectfully, I would ask that the public refrain from rushing to judgment until the district can complete its investigation."
A video of the taunts that Dickerson posted on Facebook has been viewed thousands of times.
