Family, friends and classmates are mourning a 12-year-old Avenel girl who was fatally struck Tuesday by an NJ Transit train.
NJ Transit officials say Ashlyn Ferriero was playing with her friends on the tracks when she was killed. Ashlyn?s mother says the seventh-grader was going to turn 13 in less than three weeks.
Ashlyn?s friends and classmates set up a memorial for her at the Avenel station, near where the accident occurred.
Meanwhile, NJ Transit says although the train operator saw the children on the tracks, it was impossible to stop the train in the short amount of time.
