A fallen New Jersey police officer was honored Saturday, decades after his service.
Officer Samuel Kriney served with the Bound Brook Police Department 83 years ago. He is the only member of that department to die in the line of duty.
His great-great-grandchildren unveiled a memorial in his name at the ceremony.
On Oct. 29, 1932, the motorcycle officer was involved in a crash while on duty. He died 92 days later at 38 years old.
Officials say it was that time-lapse that prevented Kriney from being honored earlier. Because he died more than 90 days after the incident, it wasn't considered in the line of duty, according to his grandson.
Because of the technicality, Kriney's widow never received police benefits, his grandson says.
The ceremony was held on the same day as the Unity Tour, a ride by 500 police officers to Washington, D.C. to honor fallen colleagues. The group stopped by to pay their respects.
