After a season of hard work, the Fairleigh Dickinson University women's basketball team is celebrating its first March Madness appearance in school history.
The 29-3 Knights finished their season undefeated in conference play and snagged their first NEC championship since 1992 with Sunday’s 66-49 victory over Stonehill. They clinched their ticket to March Madness with Thursday’s 90-61 win over Chicago State.
Sunday night, the team will learn where it’s going and who it’s playing on the national stage.
Although this is a new experience for the Knights, it’s not new for their coach. This is Stephanie Gaitley’s 10th trip to the big dance, but her first with FDU.
The Knights have won 22 straight games, and the last nine have been blowouts by more than 10 points.
The latest ESPN Bracketology projection has the Knights as a 16-seed headed to Los Angeles to take on top-ranked USC.
Right now, FDU is the only team from New Jersey confirmed to be a part of March Madness on the women’s or men’s side.
The Princeton women’s team has a chance. ESPN currently projects them as the last team in. The Seton Hall women’s team is also watching Selection Sunday closely.
No men’s teams are expected to make the tournament, but the men’s East Regional, including the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight, will be hosted this year at the Prudential Center.
