(05/04/06) NEWARK ? Medical experts in New Jersey are warning residents about the dangers of Lyme disease amid a rise in cases.
Researchers say the number of Lyme disease cases in New Jersey is up 23 percent since last year. According to experts, the spike has been caused by humans infringing on natural areas. Natural habitats, such as lawns and wooded areas, are often inhabited by ticks carrying the ailment.
Experts say people should avoid wooded areas to decrease their chances of getting Lyme disease. If an individual finds a tick on their body, it doesn?t necessarily mean they?ve been inflicted with the disease. Doctors say ticks can take up to 48-72 hours to take blood from the body. If detected early, Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics.
