The mess left behind by the nor?easter has many New Jersey homeowners scrambling to clean up or repair their homes. However, flood victims are urged to do some homework before hiring a contractor.
The Division of Consumer Affairs says that con artists and price gougers often try to take advantage of disaster victims. Consumer experts say con artists may promise to repair a home, accept money and then leave the job unfinished.
There are a few ways homeowners can protect themselves from a scam. Experts say homeowners should try to go with a licensed contractor they know, or at least check with the Division of Consumer Affairs to determine if a contractor is licensed.
Residents are also urged to shop around for several estimates. Experts recommend getting everything in writing, including a guaranteed price that cannot be exceeded without the homeowner?s approval.
