The flu is a serious, contagious and even potentially fatal virus.
Even though the peak of season tends to be around January and February, flu season has officially arrived.
Dr. Elizabeth Jenny Avital, of Jacobi Medical Center, says kids as young as 6 months old and older should get vaccinated.
She says those with underlying health conditions such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease are more at risk of dying from the flu.
Doctors say it is not too late to get a flu shot, and medical centers like Jacobi are offering the vaccine.
Last year, close to 2,000 New York residents died from influenza and pneumonia, which can develop from the flu.
