Expanded NJ cold case unit charges NY man in sex assault case
An expanded Bergen County Cold Case Homicide Unit has captured and charged a New York City man in a 14-year-old sexual assault cold case.
Authorities say Roydell Cameron was arrested March 29 at John F. Kennedy International Airport as he tried to board a flight to Jamaica. He remains jailed in New York pending extradition to New Jersey.
Authorities say the expanded cold case homicide unit helped develop DNA evidence in the case, which led to Cameron being identified as a suspect. The 39-year-old Bronx man is accused of raping a woman at gunpoint in Palisades Park in April 2005.
The expanded unit will now be known as the North Jersey Regional Cold Case Task Force. It will be comprised of several agencies, including the Bergen, Essex and Passaic county prosecutor’s offices, New Jersey State Police and the Newark Police Department. The task force will work toward closing unsolved cases in northern New Jersey.
"By sharing personnel and expertise and ideas and technology and other resources we can solve these older cases,” said New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal. “Because by coming together as we have, on even decade-old matters, we can bring closure and we can deliver justice to families who desperately seek it."
Cameron faces two counts of sexual assault, as well as a weapons offense and a charge of making terroristic threats.
