The Environmental Protection Agency announced Tuesday a $332 million cleanup plan for a contaminated site near MetLife Stadium in Moonachie.

Officials said that more than 100 companies have verbally agreed to help pay for remediating Berry's Creek, which snakes around the western border of MetLife Stadium and the Meadowlands sports complex. The creek is a tributary to the Hackensack River and runs through six Bergen County communities.

A mercury processing plant operated on the site for more than 40 years, until the mid-1970s.

The EPA says the creek has the highest levels of mercury and PCB than any freshwater ecosystem in the country. Those toxins can cause neurological and developmental damage.

“This is part of our industrial past. And what we’re trying to do is reclaimed this and restore the proper balance to the watershed,” says EPA regional administrator Pete Lopez.

The cleanup will be paid for by the polluters, according to the EPA.
