An Englewood police officer underwent emergency surgery Monday after his motorcycle collided with a van.
Police said Douglas Menist, 45, was responding to a silent alarm, which turned out to be a false alarm.
Menist was riding his motorcycle on Van Nostrant near Grand Avenue. Englewood police said he suffered four major impacts. He broke his left shoulder when he collided with the van. His right shoulder broke when he hit a street sign. Menist's motorcylce then hit the curb, which sent him into a pole and a tree, injuring his ribs.
The driver of the van was identified by his brother as Ben Cohen.
Deputy Chief Arthur O'Keefe from Englewood Police Department said, "His siren was on, according to witnesses, as well as his emergency lights."
Bergen County Prosecutor's Fatal Investigations Unit is looking into the accident due to the extent of the officer's injuries.
O'Keefe said the injuries were so extensive that rescue workers decided against a helicopter evacuation. Menist is being treated at Hackensack Medical Center. He is listed in critical condition.
The deputy chief describes Menist as a well-regarded officer and dedicated family man.
