Emotions boiled over tonight at a meeting where Newark Schools Superintendent Cami Anderson announced the closing of seven public schools.
About 300 school administrators, parents and teachers packed the auditorium at Rutgers-Newark to hear the announcement. News 12 New Jersey was there as parents were turned away from the over-capacity auditorium.
The schools that are set to close include Dayton Street, Martin Luther King, 18th Avenue, Miller Street and Burnet Street elementary schools, and the ninth grade academies at Barringer and West Side high schools.
Anderson says the facilities were targeted because of declining enrollment and poor performance. During the meeting, angry parents stood up and protested her proposals, including the plan to close schools.
