The city of Elizabeth is teaming up with Newark Liberty International Airport to promote the city to all travelers.
Elizabeth officials say that the city is New Jersey’s most convenient travel gateway, allowing local businesses to connect with travelers on a global scale.
Mayor Chris Bollwage says it is all about growth.
“The immigration here in our city has helped fuel the city and grow it,” he says. “And now this airport brings more opportunities for people who come here, stay here.”
Those who make their way through the airport’s Terminal A will find new signage promoting the city. There is also a centrally located kiosk to allow travelers to book hotels and find top-rated restaurants.
“If you are going up Morris Avenue, that’s our Columbian District. If you are going through other areas, you can dine in Old Portugal, Old Italy…Cuba,” says Jennifer Costa, president and CEO of the Greater Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce.
Travelers will also be able to find information about local museums and details regarding Elizabeth’s diverse culture and history. Nearby organizations say they are thrilled to spread the word.
“We’ve gotten to speak with people from all over the U.S., international travelers and are just becoming aware with the fact that they are on historic ground,” says Mark Hurwitz, of Third New Jersey Regiment "The Jersey Blues.”
The Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce says it is hoping the new program will draw new eyes to Elizabeth given its proximity to Newark Liberty.
