A resident of a Bayonne senior apartment complex has died and eight police officers were injured following a fire on Tuesday.

Flames first broke out around 7:15 a.m. on the third floor of the Post Road Gardens Center on Avenue A.

Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver says the resident was pulled out of the burning building but later died. The Bayonne Fire Department and Bayonne Police Department continued to evacuate residents from the building and moved others to lower floors for safety. The fire was ruled under control just after 8:15 a.m.

The chief says the police officers are recovering after suffering smoke inhalation while trying to get everyone out. No firefighters were injured.

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
