Thousands lined the streets at Edison's Indian Independence Day Parade Sunday, but the event was marred by the mayor's handling of an alleged case of police brutality.

Ranjikhant Perikh accused Edison police of inappropriate behavior stemming from his arrest at an illegal Fourth of July fireworks display. Perikh's wife, Julie Patel, circulated petitions to try and get Mayor Jun Choi booted from the parade. Patel believes the mayor should have talked more openly with her family, rather than defending officers. The police union also wants Choi to resign, saying he is politicizing the issue and hurting morale.

Edison's Indian community says it may pursue legal action or go to federal agencies about the incident.
