Members of the Edison Town Council have formed a special committee to investigate racist campaign flyers that surfaced during the 2017 school board election.
The committee held its first meeting Tuesday night, in which six people testified.
Council members say that some of the testimony suggested that it was an inside job.
"If you're going to do something like this in this town, we're going to try and find you and expose you for it,” says Councilman Robert Diehl. “If you think you're going to run for public office and work in town, that could be part of your resume."
The flyers targeted then-school board candidates Jerry Shi and Falguni Patel – both of Asian descent. The flyers read “Make Edison Great Again.” “The Chinese and Indians are taking over our town!”
Both candidates won their seats.
The committee will be hearing more testimony at its next hearing on May 23.
