The Edison Animal Shelter has temporarily closed its doors after an inspection found a fungal infection known as ringworm on some pets.

The township announced the move on Friday and said its dogs and cats would be quarantined for treatment.

"We took swift action to close the Animal Shelter and to begin cleanup procedures. Our first priority was to protect our six-person staff, 87 volunteers and the public, and to treat the animals being cared for there," Business Administrator Maureen Ruane says.

The township says it has hired a licensed remediation firm to handle the cleanup. Veterinarians already working with the town will treat the 13 dogs and 31 cats now quarantined.

Officials say the shelter may be closed for up to a week.
