East Windsor Township Police Department had to respond to a sewer backup Wednesday morning in their own building.
For the fifth time this year, employees walked into a hazmat situation at their station on One Mile Road, according to an East Windsor PBA Instagram post.
The Instagram post said fecal matter backed up through the toilets and drains of the building and flooded the department floors, some of which are carpeted. The post also said there is no air conditioning, no working showers and poor air circulation.
"The police department headquarters is one of the town’s only 24-hour shelters. Unfortunately, we cannot ensure even most basic human necessities are provided while at our headquarters in its current state. Mind you we still have a duty to arrest criminals and they can be subject to these conditions for days," the post said.
The post continued to say, "This occurrence has happened nearly a dozen times in the past four years, but Mayor Janice Mironov continues to 'fix' these issues with bubble gum and duct tape. Her unwillingness to provide funds for the proper maintenance of police headquarters is now going to cost taxpayers substantially more to make necessary repairs."
Workers from the Department of Public Works cleaned and disinfected the building each time it happened to keep the building in working order, according to the post and a statement by the township.
Township officials told News 12 New Jersey that plumbing professionals determined this most recent incident was caused by a malfunctioning computer board that operates the pump switches. They say the necessary parts were purchased and the board was replaced, and that the system is fully functional.
