An East Windsor family is criticizing mandatory drug tests that are becoming increasingly popular in many schools.
Dorothy Raymond?s son, Bobby, is a student at Marvin H. Krebs Middle School. She claims the school unfairly targeted her son. Bobby says since he and his friend were running late to lunch, they looked disheveled and nervous. Bobby says an assistant principal then asked the two to go to the nurse?s office to take a drug test. Raymond says the issue isn?t that Bobby was required to take the drug test, but it is how the staff treated her son. Bobby tested negative for drugs and the school apologized to the Raymond family.
School Superintendent Ronald Bolandi says mandatory drug tests for students who show signs of drug use are state law. The district says it can?t get rid of drug testing. Bolandi adds that the school?s policy is to give students 24 hours to be tested in the school or with their own doctor. The students can?t return to classes until they are tested.
