Statistics show Ocean County has the deadliest roads in the state, and now efforts are under way to change that trend.

Ocean County freeholders gave increased funds to local authorities for DUI checkpoints. The county will now have the checkpoints throughout the year instead of just during the summer months.

Last year, the county had 64 motor vehicle deaths. Officials say this year the county has already seen 55 deaths. Authorities blame drunk drivers for about a third of the fatalities. They also say new drivers account for many of the crashes.

Posters will be placed in schools and libraries to remind drivers to slow down and be cautious on the roads.
