A fire caused the roof to collapse in a Bellville apartment building Tuesday night and left dozens of residents homeless.
Fire officials say a teen accidentally started the fire on Rutgers Court. They say the teen was using a match to look for a remote and he set his mattress on fire in his first-floor apartment.
Residents escaped with little more than the clothes on their back as the fire quickly spread to the second floor and eventually the roof. Fire officials say the roof later collapsed.
It took firefighters close to four hours to get the flames under control. Fire investigators say the smoke and fire alarms worked properly, which is why no one was seriously injured.
