A family of four is displaced by a fire that tore through their home in Avenel Tuesday night, killing their dog.
"I was in my room...I heard a scream...I looked up through my blinds, and I saw a big flame right around over there," Jaden Greene, who lives across the street, said. "I rushed out of my house, went outside. I saw they were screaming help, help, help."
Neighbors told News 12 it was just after 7 p.m. when they heard the screaming on Cornell Street.
"There was a dog there on the second floor. The cops, firefighters came, trying to get the dog out from the second window, but unfortunately, the dog didn't make it,” said Greene, whose mother called 911.
Two people also jumped out of the windows on the second floor to escape the flames, according to the Woodbridge Police Department.
They said another person is also being treated for minor burns.
"My wife called me and said, 'Hey, there's smoke coming out of the house next door.' We came back...and just saw the melee. By that time, ambulance, fire and police were on scene. It was pretty intense," said Daniel Gutzmore, another neighbor.
By Wednesday morning, the scorched home was boarded up from the damage.
The Red Cross said it is offering the family emergency financial assistance at this time.
"Those folks, as far as I know, moved in, man, it couldn't have been three months...I hadn't gotten the opportunity to meet them, but I know the house was sold, so they just moved in. That was pretty sad to see," Gutzmore said.
The fire department told News 12 the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
