The Department of Education has released today a list of seven more underperforming schools that are slated for closure, three of them in The Bronx.
The list includes Samuel Gompers Career and Technical Education High School, Grace Dodge Career and Technical Education High School and The Aspire Prep Middle School. Yesterday, the Department of Education released another list that included two more Bronx schools and a middle school program.
Parents and students at Samuel Gompers Career and Technical Education High School are split on the decision to phase out the school. While some are upset, others told News 12 The Bronx that they are not surprised at all.
According to documents, Gompers has a 41-percent graduation rate, a number that is down from just 58 percent a year ago. The school also received an ?F? on a progress report that measures the performance of students and school environment.
Education officials say while the decision to close Gompers was a tough one, when a school fails its students, they have a responsibility to offer better options.
If the proposal to shut down Gompers is approved, there will be no incoming freshmen after the end of this school year, and the high school would officially close in June of 2015.
DOE plans to close 12 struggling schools, including 2 in BX
