Police say a Department of Education employee and a Bronx man have been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a Bronx father and the wounding of his brother in Kingsbridge.
A DOE employee, Naya Brown, 26, and Pernell Warren, 27, are accused of killing 44‑year‑old Keon Gill on Jan. 25 at West 242nd Street and Broadway. Gill’s family told News 12 he had been
celebrating his birthday at a local bar the night of his death.
Gill attended the party with his brother, Luis, and a few friends, according to his family. After the party ended just before 3 a.m., police say shots were fired, fatally striking Gill in the chest and injuring his 35‑year‑old brother in the leg.
Gill is survived by his four children.
“I mean, eventually they say you heal… I don’t think so. It’s going to take a very long time,” said his mother, Brenda Gill.
She called the arrest one step toward justice but said she could never understand why someone would do that to her child. She added that she wanted everyone responsible to face the strongest sentences possible.
Sources say Brown works as a community coordinator and has been with the DOE since 2022. The DOE released a statement saying: “NYC Public Schools takes all matters involving employee conduct extremely seriously. The alleged behavior is deeply disturbing, and upon learning of these allegations, this individual was immediately suspended. If the allegations are confirmed, we will pursue termination.”
Police say Warren faces additional charges, including manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.
