Disposable income is disappearing for many Garden State residents amid the possibility of a coming recession.

According to an NPD Group consumer survey, 57 percent of people are planning to eat out less. Cindy Suarez of Avenel falls into that category.

"We used to go out once a week, twice a week," she says. "Now it's like twice a month."

The survey also shows many are trying to save money by cutting back on clothing purchases, sacrificing entertainment and spending less time behind the wheel. Any way you cut it, consumers are spending less.

Some New Jersey residents have turned to investing less in their retirements in order to keep money at hand right now.

"Instead of taking 12 percent out for my 401K, I'm having to take 2 percent out," says Renee Miller, of Edison. "We have to do what we [have to] do."

The increase in frugality has many retailers worried as the holiday shopping season approaches. Many are offering early sales to drum up revenue before the economy gets any worse.
