A group of divers at the Belmar Marina headed out to sea Monday to identify an unknown wreck off the Jersey Shore.
Expedition Leader Matt Breslin, 17, says the expedition is to find out more about a boat nine miles off Sea Girt and about 80 feet underwater.
"Every wreck should have a story. I don't think anything should go untold," he says. "I love finding things that aren't really known."
The divers say they found the anchor from the shipwreck and took measurements from stem to stern. As of now, they believe the ship was a coal carrier that sank between 1884 and 1936.
"If we can figure out the size, we can start to narrow the field of candidates," says Shipwreck Researcher Dan Lieb.
Breslin says he’ll be searching newspaper accounts or insurance claims to the identity of this ship. He says it can take months.
The 17-year-old is finishing his senior year at Brick Memorial High School and plans to major in marine science in college with a long time goal of diving.
