The Diocese of Trenton announced Friday that it will be closing three different schools in Monmouth County at the end of this academic year.
The announcement came from Bishop John Smith, devastating parents, students and staff members. According to the Diocese, rising costs and a decrease in enrollment are to blame for the future closures. In a statement issued by the Diocese, St. Joe?s and St. Ann?s in Keansburg and Holy Family in Hazlet have lost more than half their enrollment since 2001.
About 386 current students will be affected by the closings and between the three schools, 60 teachers and staff members will be left unemployed. The Diocese says it will help some families with transportation costs to their new schools. It is also putting together severance packages for faculty members losing their jobs.
Supporters of St. Joe's will hold a rally to keep the school open on Jan. 27.
