Call it a “European Road Trip” – the New Jersey Devils will be starting the new NHL season overseas.
The NHL is sending the team to Switzerland for a practice game and then to Sweden to open the regular season against the Edmonton Oilers.
The team is coming off last season, when they exceeded expectations.
Coach John Hynes says everyone thought last year that the team was going to come in last place. But instead they made it to the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Even the NHL Network was intrigued by the team and is following the Devils around for training camp in a documentary series. Hynes says that he doesn’t want everything out in the public, but says that the documentary series is mostly a good thing for the team.
“I think it’s tremendous for our organization. I think it’s tremendous for our players,” he says.
Team leaders say that the goal is to make sure the players are able to have chemistry together - from the youngest players still in their teens, to the older players in their 30s.
The Devils’ first home game at the Prudential Center will be Oct. 1 against the Washington Capitals.
