Truck drivers coming in and out of New Jersey who use a rest stop in Burlington County have a new tool that will help save money and the environment.
The rest stop between Route 295 and the New Jersey Turnpike in Bordentown has a new system that lets truck drivers plug in for power, so they can turn their diesel engines off.
Drivers say they are required to take 10 hours of rest. They say sometimes idling an engine for that amount of time can cost at least $30 in fuel. However, renting the power plug for the same amount of time costs approximately $10. Drivers can get power, air conditioning and heat to their semi-trucks while the engine is turned off.
The state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) adds that the system helps cut down pollution. The DEP estimates the power plugs will stop almost 20 tons of soot from heading into the air every week.
The Bordentown rest stop has 92 bays where trucks can plug in. New Jersey already has one other stop with the system and plans to put another one in at the Vince Lombardi rest stop along the Turnpike.
