While many companies are cutting back, a mattress maker in New Jersey is expanding. The Shifman Mattress Company in Newark announced a 24,000-square foot expansion of its Mott Street factory, which will result in new job opportunities. The company has been in business since 1893, and many of its workers live nearby, riding their bikes or walking to work. ?Our employees did such a good job over the years that when we ran out of room and space to keep production going we had to make a decision whether to move or to stay here and expand the business. We decided to do that and I'm really very happy we made that decision at the time,? said Shifman Mattress Owner Mike Hammer. When it comes to business in Newark, Mayor Cory Booker says Shifman Mattress is not alone. "We cut a ribbon on another business earlier this week, as our small business loan fund continues to grant loans in this economy to people that have the same dream as the Hammer family,? said Booker.
