Despite recent report that outlined wasteful spending by the school district, Union City Mayor Brian Stack said he does not plan to make changes to the board. This comes ahead of next Tuesday?s statewide school elections, which won't include the Union City school district since board members are appointed by the mayor. Union City is one of only 21 districts across the state with such a system. In the wake of a scathing state audit that criticized the district over excessive spending, some taxpayers aren't happy about that. In one example, the audit found that school bus drivers were making up to $73,000 a year in overtime alone. Despite the problems, Joe Lauro, a spokesperson for Union City Mayor Brian Stack, said the mayor does not plan to make changes to the board. ?While we're concerned about some of the findings in the audit, some of them are several years old. Some have been corrected. The rest will be corrected,? Lauro said. Frank Belluscio, of the New Jersey School Boards Association, said even though Union City voters can?t select the school board, they can still make their voices heard at the ballot box when it comes time for the mayoral election.
