DEP issues advisories for several Jersey Shore beaches

New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection issued advisories Tuesday for several beaches in Monmouth and Ocean counties after testing revealed levels of bacteria that exceeded acceptable standards.
Under state regulations, the concentration of Enterococci, a type of bacteria, should not exceed 104 colonies per 100 milliliters of water in a sample. Enterococci is a type of bacteria that is an indicator of possible contamination.
The following beaches are under advisories Tuesday:
MONMOUTH COUNTY
- Brown Avenue South beach, Spring Lake
- York Avenue beach, Spring Lake
The following beaches are closed Tuesday:
MONMOUTH COUNTY
- Highlands Rec Center beach (bay), Highlands Borough
The advisories and closures come after heavy rains Monday. DEP officials said elevated levels of bacteria are often detected in waterways following rainstorms.
DEP officials said in all of 2016, only one beach in Cape May had to be closed due to high levels from a spill. Beaches are routinely tested once a week.
