The demolition of a building known to many in Lynbrook as the feather factory started over the weekend, but with that demolition has come some controversy.

Many have called the building an eyesore over the year as the Mangrove Feather Factory has been vacant for over a decade.

It's being taken down to make way for a seven-story apartment complex.

Last year, the developer received approval from village officials to demolish the building. It has been vacant since 2008.

The new $95 million 201-unit apartment complex will only have 10% of the units made into affordable housing and will cost around $103 million.

The other space will be a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments.

Business owners and some residents say it's a good fit for the downtown to hopefully revitalize the area.

"I'm looking forward to it - hopefully it'll bring a lot of business to the restaurant and local traffic," says Michael Sherack, manager of Pearsall's Station Grill. "It would be great."

Others say there's too much development in the village and not enough green space.

"More green space might have been nice and also more parking would have been good," says Nick Musto, of Lynbrook. "Everyone has mixed feelings about it."

Lynbrook Mayor Alan Beach says there weren't too many options left to help add to the village's tax base following years of negotiations.

Once the building is fully demolished, it will take up to two years to build the apartment complex.
