Demand causes IDNYC card website to crash
The demand for the city's new municipal ID card is so high that the website to sign up for an appointment to get a municipal ID has crashed multiple times.
The policy changed to require that individuals schedule an appointment to sign up for the card due to long lines at enrollment centers since the program launched Monday.
The director of operations for the IDNYC program says that switching to an appointment-based system was always an option if needed in order to make the signup process go more smoothly.
Appointments can be made on site, by calling 311 or by going online, and there is no deadline to apply for a card.
Many residents stood outside the Bronx Library Center on East Kingsbridge Road just to sign up for a future appointment after the website crashed.
The IDNYC card provides proof of identity that will be recognized by the NYPD as a valid form of identification. It also provides free access to many cultural, financial and public health institutions. It's available to all New York City residents who are at least 14 years old, including immigrants.
