Speed hiring, the Great Resignation -- there are a lot of
different job trends worth noting. In this week's Deep Dive, News
12's Kristie Reeter is taking a look at the big counties in the area
to see what is happening in the workforce.
In a Deep Dive preview poll, New Jersey residents were asked: What
changes have you taken in your career? A majority of people, 54%, said they
found a new job.
Caleb Silver with Investopedia has the latest on unemployment.
“Well in New Jersey, you still have the third highest unemployment
in the nation at 6.3%,” says Silver. “The national average is more around 4%.
But the counties we track have seen some good hiring and a nice drop in
unemployment, especially Hudson County, 5.2% that's much lower than it was to
start the year. Bergen County, 4.6%, Monmouth County, 4.2% and Morris County
,3.7% unemployment -- below the national average."
Are we seeing speed hiring, and in what industries?
"Probably you are seeing it in the leisure and hospitality
industries where the hiring has been most aggressive,” says Silver. “We have
seen huge job gains across bars and restaurants we've seen those jobs jump
16.4% in the past year, that's probably where the speed hiring is because those
small businesses, those restaurants need a lot of workers right now, but we are
also seeing big job gains in mining and logging and transportation in New
Jersey. So, probably a lot of speed hiring going on in those industries."
