The New Jersey Attorney General's Office released video from a deadly moped crash during a pursuit in Paterson that killed 28-year-old David Lucero in September 2023.
The police pursuit started after an “attempted motor vehicle stop” on Union Boulevard in Totowa. Police in a marked car started chasing the motorized scooter that Lucero was riding. Another male passenger was also on board. Other police vehicles joined the pursuit that went into Paterson.
The scooter hit a bystander's car near McBride and Murray avenues. Lucero, a Paterson resident, and his passenger were both ejected from the moped. They were taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson where Lucero died. The passenger involved in the collision sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Lucero's death during a law enforcement encounter is under investigation by the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability.
