The Department of Health and Senior Services has extended the deadline for mandatory flu vaccines for kids, giving parents an additional two weeks to have their children vaccinated.
According to officials, New Jersey is the first state to make flu vaccines for kids mandatory. The state now requires children ages 6 months to 5 years who attend day care centers or preschools to be vaccinated.
Though some parents and local officials feel there are risks involved in vaccinating young children, local doctors and the Department of Health believe the benefits outweigh the risks.
The grace period will allow children to attend school as long as parents provide proof that they are in the process of getting a flu shot within the next two weeks.
