A dead fetus was found in sewage flowing into the Passaic Valley Sewage Plant Monday.
Newark police are investigating the gruesome discovery and planning an autopsy. Details of the fetus' gender, viability or development have not been released to the public yet.
Homicide detectives were called in at around 11 a.m. after the fetus was discovered by plant workers. According to police spokesperson Todd McClendon, there are no definitive indications a crime was committed.
The Passaic Valley Sewage Plant is located near Port Newark and serves approximately 30 municipalities from three counties.
