Edgewater Park residents spotted a dead dolphin on the beach Wednesday morning.
Witnesses say the dolphin was found at 7 a.m. but were unsure of how long it has been there. The dolphin had cuts on its body and appeared bloody.
The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society says it received the reports of the dead dolphin in the early morning. The NYPD's Harbor Unit, 45th Precinct officers, and state Department of Environmental Conservation police were on the scene and removed the animal from the beach.
The animal is set to be transported to an offsite location, where the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society will conduct an examination on the animal to identify a potential cause of death and any other information.
Since late 2022, 10 dead whales, mostly humpbacks, have been found dead along the Jersey Shore, something the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is now investigating.
