The Associated Humane Societies of Newark rescued nearly 20 dogs that were supposedly living in deplorable conditions in Irvington.
The agency says that it received a call Monday night about a situation where 18 adult and puppy boxer-mix dogs were living in tiny cages that were filled with feces.
The owners were not home at the time and officials are trying to determine who the owners are. According to a news release, it seems that the animals hadn't received care for a time and appeared to be malnourished.
The dogs were taken to an AHS facility in Newark to be treated by veterinarians.
The New Jersey SPCA is investigating.
