Crews have recovered the body of a man who went missing in the Hackensack River Sunday.

The Hackensack Police Department says that the body of Jose Cortez was recovered around 3 p.m. Tuesday. Cortez had not been seen since he went into the river Sunday afternoon.

Friends of the 39-year-old victim told police that he was trying to swim across the river to Bogota Sunday afternoon.

Officials say that Cortez’s body was found close to where he entered the river.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death
