Van Cortlandt Park, the third largest park in New York City, will be getting an upgrade.
In a news conference Wednesday, Councilman Andrew Cohen and Sen. Jeff Klein announced $1.2 million in state and city grants to turn a barren field into a playground with running trails.
The plan is two years in the making for the Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy and everyone they have collaborated with.
The next steps in the process include making a presentation for the community board and developing final plans.
Groundbreaking for the projected is expected in two years. The Parks Department estimates construction will take one year to complete.
