A New Jersey township might get a fulltime mayor with an $85,000 raise in salary.
The Edison Township Council on Monday passed an ordinance that would change the post in 2022 from part-time and raise the mayor’s pay to $135,000. Council President Joyce Ship Freeman abstained from the 4-2 vote.
Mayor Tom Lankey tells The Home News Tribune he’s studying whether to veto the ordinance. Lankey works as a senior vice president for JFK Health System and also serves as board chairman for a bank.
Councilman Joe Coyle, who proposed the ordinance, says Lankey is hardpressed to explain how he can juggle those jobs while trying to “effectively govern on behalf of 100,000 residents.”
